Happy birthday, America. On Wednesday, July 4, also known as Independence Day, the nation celebrates the 231st anniversary of its founding. Famous figures from history – Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and others – long ago signed the final draft of the Declaration of Independence late in the evening on July 4, 1776, officially marking the birth of the United States of America. The following year, and every year since, Americans have celebrated the date with fireworks, barbecues and displays of patriotism.
